What happened? On
October 21, 2014 Wyoming lawyers gave out a notice stating that they
"would not defend a state law that defined marriage as a union between one
man and one women"(Moen). This notice meant that the ban of gay marriages
was lifted and same-sex marriages were legalized. The notice also stated that
the state of Wyoming would also recognize same-sex marriages that were legally
preformed out of state.
As for who will be advantage of this, well not as many people as you would expect. Wyoming is the least populated state in American. and according to The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law "only about 700 gay couples live in Wyoming and only 200 are expected to marry within the first year" (Moen). There was no real rush to the court house. The video below is a news segment that aired the day the notice was released. |

Connection to Opportunity
The legalization of same-sex marriages in Wyoming is an
example of opportunity in our nation. It is allowing gay couples to have the
same privileges that marriage provides for straight couples. The legalization
of same-sex marriage in yet another state may also sway other states and even
countries into doing the same. It isn’t only an opportunity for Wyoming couples
but for gay couples all around the nation, and possibly even the world.
